Godzilla 2 Cast and Plot Revealed; Production Begins on Monster Film

The full cast and plot synopsis for Godzilla 2 (2019) were revealed today as well as the start of film production in Atlanta, Georgia. Godzilla 2 is being produced Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and is part of the companies’ Cinematic Monsterverse. Godzilla 2 will be the third film in this particular cinematic universe. Godzilla 2 follows Gareth EdwardsGodzilla and Jordan Vogt-RobertsKong: Skull Island and will co-exist in the same ecosphere as those films.

Godzilla 2 is being helmed by Michael Dougherty and stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.

Godzilla 2 was written by Zach Shields and is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers, Thomas Tull, Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira, and Alexandra Mendes.

Godzilla 2‘s plot synopsis: “The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”

I was not a big fan of Edwards’ Godzilla. Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island was a better film in all regards and a much stronger entry into this universe. These creature films tend to focus on uninteresting human characters while relegating the interesting monsters to action sideshows. The Transformers films do the same thing. I hope this deleterious script strategy changes with Godzilla 2.
