According to Deadline, WarnerMedia, the parent of HBO, has announced that daily binge watching of HBO’s series content increased by 65% this week, compared to the four weeks prior. With the launch of season 3 of HBO’s number 1 series Westworld on March 15, which was about a week after the coronavirus lock-downs became more common across the globe, HBO subscribers already had something to be excited for when they logged into their HBO streaming app. Now with the current stay at home orders to prevent future spread of COVID-19, video streaming has become more common by viewers passing the time while they’re confined in their homes. Normally, work hours, school, and/or personal errands take the hours of the average person’s day, but now the TV has become a main source of entertainment and use of the hours in a day.

It isn’t confirmed whether or not the increase in viewership has to do with new subscribers or existing ones, but not only are new shows being watched or started, but also a few old good ones! HBO favorites like The Sopranos and Sex and the City have doubled in viewership over the past few weeks. The Wire has tripled! All 3 of those hit series having ended more than 10 years ago. Not only are shows getting attention on the HBO streaming service, but the movie viewing has increased by 70% on its own over the past month. Ebola: The Doctor’s Story (2016), an HBO documentary, being ranked one of the most watched titles this week on the streaming service platform.

With the necessity of self-distancing and self-isolation due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, streaming services all around seem to be benefiting from the millions of people staying at home across the globe. Streaming is now becoming the new norm amongst this quarantined life and can only be expected to elevate as we ride out this global lock-down.
