Tobias Lindholm‘s directorial debut A Hijacking (a.k.a. Kapringen) (2012) will be released by Magnolia Pictures in the United States on October 15, 2013. In the film, a cargo ship, the MV Rozen, is hijacked by Somali pirates. The pirates demand a huge ransom for the lives of the crew initiating a psychological game of cat and mouse between them and the CEO of the shipping company.

Magnolia Pictures will release another title, the sci-fi thriller Europa Report (2013), on October 8, 2013. After unmanned probes detect the possibility of liquid oceans holding single-celled life beneath the icy crust of Jupiter’s moon Europa, private space exploration firm Europa Ventures sends a dream team crew of the world’s best astronauts to confirm the discovery. The crew experiences a technical failure leading to loss of communication with ground control on Earth and must rely upon themselves for survival in the face of a discovery far more significant then they ever could have imagined.

Sony Pictures UK has announced the home video release date for a double play edition of the British comedy This is the End (2013) starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, and Rihanna. The stars play fictionalized versions of themselves facing down the apocalypse in modern day L.A. with hilarious consequences.

IFC Films and MPI Home Video will release director Mira Nair‘s political drama The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) on August 27, 2013. Nair’s adaptation of Mohsin Hamid‘s international bestselling novel thrills with political intrigue and an examination of post-9/11 attitudes of nationalism, patriotism, and loyalty as an American scholar is kidnapped by anti-American Pakistani radicals. The CIA suspects the involvement of a young Pakistani professor, but as his story of assimilation unfolds, his involvement becomes unclear. The film stars Kiefer Sutherland, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber, and Riz Ahmed.

Dogwoof Films has picked up director Joshua Oppenheimer‘s documentary The Act of Killing (2012) for distribution with a preliminary release date of November 25, 2013. The film examines the Indonesian death squads responsible for the murders of over a half a million people between 1966 and 1966. The Blu-ray will feature a director’s cut, an essay by Errol Morris, commentary by Werner Herzog, Q & A with the director and Penny Woolcock, the original theatrical trailer, and deleted scenes.

CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution have announced a November 5, 2013 release date for the 13-episode miniseries Under the Dome. The series ran on CBS to record viewership and chronicles a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by a giant impenetrable dome. The town’s inhabitants must rely upon each other for survival, strive to find an explanation for the dome, and grapple with their sudden isolation. Online retailer Amazon is scheduled to offer a special edition Blu-ray in dome-shaped packaging with exclusive special features.

John Carpenter‘s remake of Howard HawksRio Bravo, 1976’s Assault on Precinct 13 (later remade again in 2005 into a hit film starring Ethan Hawke) will get another release by Scream! Factory this November just in time for the holidays. The release will have new, as-of-yet-unspecified, special features.

On July 1, 2011, the Montreux Jazz Festival hosted jazz legends Carlos Santana and John McLoughlin as headliners. Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the concert Santana and McLoughlin: Invitation to Illumination-Live at Montreux 2011 on August 20, 2011. The guitar virtuosos reunited to perform most of their classic 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender as well as hits by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and John Lee Hooker. They are joined onstage for the finale by Montreux Jazz Festival founder the late Claude Nobs.
