Game of Thrones Prequel Series House of the Dragon given Full Season Order

Following the cancellation of the Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones TV series comes the news that the second green-lit pilot episode for a prequel Game of Thrones series (announced in September 2019) has been given a full series order by HBO. This Game of Thrones development was announced during AT&T’s unveiling of its HBO Max streaming service. Christened House of the Dragon, the new Game of Thrones TV show will chronicle House Targaryen events three hundred years before those in Game of Thrones.

The first season of House of the Dragon will ten episodes long, the length of a standard season of Game of Thrones.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s 2019 book Fire & Blood, the show will feature some of the “history of House Targaryen…span[ning] roughly 150 years” that leads to “a massive civil war in the Seven Kingdoms…between two rival branches of House Targaryen,” commonly referred to as The Dance of the Dragons. The eventual civil war will be featured, at some point, in the TV series.

House of the Dragon was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal.

Director Miguel Sapochnik will direct the pilot episode and additional episodes of the TV series.

Ryan Condal will be written the screenplays for the TV series.

Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal will be the joint showrunners on House of the Dragon. Sapochnik, Ryan Condal, Martin, and Vince Gerardis will all be executive producers on the TV series.
