James Gunn Reveals He is Already Writing His Next Film after MAN OF TOMORROW (2027)

James Gunn is already looking ahead to his next film

In a fun social media post, James Gunn revealed that he is currently writing the script for his next feature film.

The co-head of DC Studios announced on Threads that he began writing the script while his current film, Man of Tomorrow (2027), is currently being put together in the editorʻs room. 

“I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!!” Gunn joked on Threads.

People on social media reacted with anticipation, hoping that the movie would be a new Wonder Woman or Justice League film. Some are even hoping it will be the long-anticipated DC Universe Batman film (not to be confused with Matt Reeveʻs The Batman (2022) and its Sequel, The Batman Part 2 (2028), which are considered DC Elseworlds stories). 

There have even been a couple of well-meaning digs at the director, suggesting that the film he is writing is a sequel to Man of Tomorrow, called Man of the Day After Tomorrow. Some even joke that the next film will be about the infamous Batman villain Condiment King.

The details of what this project is currently unknown. Gunn has given no more indication about the project aside from the fact that it’s being written. While it’s possible that it will be set in the same DC universe as the other films, such as Superman (2025), Supergirl (2026), Clayface  (2026), and Man of Tomorrow, there is a possibility that it will be a DC Elseworlds story similar to The Batman. Or perhaps it wonʻt be a DC-affiliated movie at all.

After all, with Warner Bros.’ leadership changing following the merger with Skydance, the studio’s future seemed up in the air. Even though the dust has started to settle and James Gunn and Peter Safran are still in charge of DC Studios, IGN has reported that Gunnʻs has met with the new leaders of the company, and despite having a great interaction, his contract hasnʻt seem to have been officially extended. Meaning that, come April 2027, there is a chance he will be out of the superhero world entirely. So it’s possible that what he is writing could be his first non-superhero film in almost two decades.

Still, while the internet speculates about what the film is going to be and who is going to be in it, in the end we won’t know until after Man of Tomorrow comes out. That, and Clayfaceʻs box office numbers, might contribute to whether we will see what James Gunn is cooking up.
