Joker Sequel Not in the Works Yet at Warner Bros.

A Todd Phillips-directed sequel to Joker is not currently moving forward at Warner Bros. Though inevitable, the news reports today of a green-lit Joker sequel are not true. Joker has made $1.019 Billion at the world-wide box office and its lead actor, Joaquin Phoenix, is destined for a lead actor nomination at the 2020 Academy Awards. Those two facts alone mean that there is no way that Warner Bros. or DC Comics is going to let a sequel opportunity pass them by. A sequel film is likely to happen but nothing has been officially announced yet and no sequel negotiations have concluded.

Warner Bros. reportedly has a sequel option in Phoenix’s original contract for Joker. If they do, that was a wise, prescient  move on their part, and will eventually be something that Warner exercises. With the box office of Joker, not only will Phoenix’s team ask for a substantial uptick in Phoenix’s paycheck, they will probably ask for points on the back-end (i.e. participation in the profits of the film) as well. And guess what? They’ll get it for Warner Bros. to get Phoenix back in one of the most highly anticipated sequel films of the next few years.
