Joker Sequel Finally Has a Script

The long-awaited sequel to 2019’s Joker has finally gotten a script and a working title which suggests the project could soon be set into motion.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor a couple of years back for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck in 2019’s Joker. It was last reported that, despite rumors of a sequel project, no script was actually in existence. Now, in a true game changing revelation, both a script and a working title have been revealed for the follow-up to the 2019 mega-hit. Filmmaker Todd Phillips and Scott Silver have created a script for the sequel. This information was revealed in an Instagram post by Phillips that featured a picture of the cover of the screenplay.

Joker: Folie à Deux is the apparent working title of the forthcoming sequel to Joker. We last left Fleck when he was placed in a mental ward at the end of the 2019 first picture. The term “Folie à deux” means “shared madness.” We don’t know what that means at the present time but, perhaps, Fleck will be sharing his mental instability with another character in some way or form. Since Robert De Niro’s character was killed off in the first film, it will most likely be a completely new supporting cast that would come with the fresh material.

Todd Phillips received an Academy Award nomination for directing the original Joker and many people believe he is going to bring the material up a notch with an even more creative sequel. Don’t count out Batman’s inclusion in the movie at some point either although nothing has been confirmed about the contents of the actual script itself.

It could be wise for the sequel to bring back the Oscar-winning Hildur Guðnadóttir who did the score for the original film. That score was, in my opinion, largely responsible for the first film being as effective as it was.

Joaquin Phoenix is said to have already read the script before the recent news of the screenplay was revealed. It’s just coming down to financial numbers to see if Phoenix will be officially taking on the project. It seems like a definite possibility at this particular juncture in time as the first movie made over a billion dollars worldwide.

While the original Joker was surely a financial triumph, its mere “B+” CinemaScore grade is something that will hopefully be improved upon with the sequel when it is finally completed. However, the completion point of this project is a long time away at this point. Until Phoenix officially accepts the role and the movie goes into actual production, this information is all pretty speculative.
