It has been well known for a while now that Snyder has been doing additional filming for his director’s cut of Justice League, which will be coming out on HBO Max in 2021. There have been some surprises such as Jared Leto returning to play the Joker after his role in Suicide Squad. And now the Martian Manhunter has been added to that list with the new concept art seen here.

While it’s not the clearest glimpse, the new art was elicited excitement from the streamers, drawing inspiration from the classic character design but with a more Snyderian twist to it. In the stream Snyder only let the panelists get a brief glance at it, before quickly hiding it away. He must be very excited to reveal all of the new creative work his team has done so far.

Despite the fact that J’onn J’onzz hasn’t had any screen time so far in the DC Cinematic Universe, we actually know quite a lot about the Martian superhero. He is a shapeshifter from Mars who at some point became stranded on Earth after his race was wiped out and later joined the Justice League. After a fan theory was suggested to him via social media, Snyder announced that J’onzz has been disguising himself as General Stanwick from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice played by Harry Lennix.

It has been hinted that the Martian Manhunter will be disguising himself as Martha Kent in Justice League, following the death of Superman when she goes to visit Lois Lane, played by Amy Adams. After Kent leaves, she will shapeshift into J’onzz and then General Stanwick, allowing Snyder to retcon the Martian Manhunter into his movies.
