Thoughts

Paramount Pictures’ new film, Love and Monsters starring Dylan O’Brien and Jessica Henwick just dropped its first trailer, giving audiences a look at two lovers seeking to reunite by trekking across a world overrun by monsters.

The young man (O’Brien) teams up with a heroic dog and a plucky father daughter survivalist duo, Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt from Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Endgame respectively, to make the dangerous journey to find his high school sweetheart (Henwick).

I’m looking forward to this film, because I can see there are going to be lots of fun monster hunting moments. Though what will make this movie really entertaining is if the characters are forced to use their creativity to evade and hunt monsters, as too many movies fall into the trap of blowing up the baddies with a big gun instead.

Paramount is presenting the film in association with Entertainment One, a Canadian entertainment company and subsidiary of Hasbro. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen produced via their production company, 21 Laps Entertainment. Known for Five Fingers For Marseilles, Matthews directed from a script by Matthew Robinson (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) and Brian Duffield (Insurgent). The script was based on a prior story conceived by Duffield.

Paramount will be skipping an in theater release instead presenting us with an “in home” premiere, which is good considering that public health officials are still warning against movie theater outings. In fact Dr. Anthony Fauci predicts people won’t be able to safely go to the movies without wearing masks until late 2021. So we won’t be venturing to the theaters anytime soon.

Love and Monsters will be hitting paid video-on-demand (VOD) on October 16, 2020.
