When Will Konami Finally Give Us the Metal Gear Movie?

Hideo Kojima‘s Metal Gear video game franchise is known for its cinematic structure as well as its impressive game play mechanics, but to date, publisher Konami still hasn’t given us a film adaptation. When will it finally arrive?

The movie adaptation has been in the works for years. In 2012 Konami revealed that producer Avi Arad would execute the adaptation just as he did for the every live action Spider Man movie. And in June 2014, Deadline reported that Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director of The Kings of Summer and Kong: Skull Island, was in negotiations to direct the film. In March 2015 — right before Kojima left Konami — the production was still proceeding at a decent pace with Vogt-Roberts still set to direct and Arad helping making everything work behind the scenes.

After two years of absolutely no news on the project, Derek Connolly, who co-wrote the Jurassic World movies and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was on boarded in to write the script in 2017 according to Variety. There weren’t a lot of new details at the time, but Vogt-Roberts did mention that he and Connolly had finished a first draft of the script together.

He also said that the adaptation is “not a direct adaptation of any particular game. It’d sound too much like a modern statement to call it a remix, because that’s not what it is, but it’s trying to fuse a couple of different storylines together, and it’s all ties together with a device I can’t really talk about right now but that I’m really excited about. I think it’s going to make a movie where people go, ‘Whoa, I’ve not seen that before,’ and that’s very cool. And I think it’s very Kojima in its approach.”

In 2018 Vogt-Roberts released concept art for the film, saying “I wanted cinematic key frames to express the world so people could reference the script and understand the world of the film without having to be knowledgeable with the game’s cutscenes, characters, or environments.”

In July 2020, Kojima made an Instagram post, saying that if actor Luca Marinelli “donned a bandanna, he’s be a spitting image of Solid Snake,” the protagonist of the franchise.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has stalled the Metal Gear project as it has every other film production in 2020. In an interview with Vogt-Roberts via Gamespot, the director said “I thought I was going to be on set on this movie a year ago. Right now, there’s a bunch of… COVID has sort of changed everything and we’re figuring out a bunch of stuff. I have no idea when it’s going to go. I will fight for it every single day.”
