HE NAMED ME MALALA (2015) Movie Trailer: In-Depth Documentary from Davis Guggenheim

He Named Me Malala Trailer

He Named Me Malala Trailer. Davis Guggenheim‘s He Named Me Malala (2015) movie trailer stars Malala Yousafzai and Jon Stewart. He Named Me Malala‘s plot synopsis: “A look at the events leading up to the Taliban’s attack on the young Pakistani school girl, Malala Yousafzai, for speaking out on girls’ education and the aftermath, including her speech to the United Nations.”

The trailer for this documentary is almost too saccharine to take seriously, were it not for the very impressive accomplishments of this young, brave girl, and the the context surrounding her traumatic past. It’s an important story to tell as often as necessary for those still ignorant on the subject to learn of it. If this helps at least a thousand more people get some slight context regarding the injustices of that particular part of the world, how they came about, what daily life is like in other places – I’m all for it.

Personally, I don’t feel an urge to seek this out. I’ve read my fair share on Malala, listened to her speak, and get my news from sources other than documentaries. Who knows, though, this may turn out to be a more personal, family-oriented film. The trailer, however, does seem to indicate that this is about “triumph” and “overcoming the odds” and other, overly sentimental buzzwords. I don’t mean to sound antagonistic against the subject of the film – Malala is an incredible, wonderful, beautiful person. I just have issues with manipulative, overly sweet Hallmark cards. We’ll have to wait and see what this truly turns out to be. The director did give us documentaries like An Inconvenient Truth, and Waiting for Superman – take from that what you will, but I’m not overly impressed.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
