Netflix renews One Day at a Time.

One Day at a Time renewed for a second season on Netflix. One Day at a Time is a reboot of the popular 1970s sitcom, this time around set in Los Angeles rather than Indianapolis. One Day at a Time tells the story of a Cuban-American family including Penelope, the newly divorced mother (Justina Machado), Penelope’s mother Lydia (Rita Moreno), and her teenage daughter Elena (Isabella Gomez) and tween son Alex (Marcel Ruiz).

One Day at a Time premiered on Netflix as a Netflix original series this January. It quickly received stellar reviews, even earning a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the reboot is similar to the original in concept, this time creator Norman Lear set out specifically to address a different audience: Latinos. It was decided early on that he needed to work with a Latino/a showrunner who would be able to ensure that the show’s cultural representation felt honest, and that’s how Lear ended up with Gloria Calderon Kellett, a Cuban-American herself who stated in an interview with Vulture that the show is based on her own family.

Although Netflix’s One Day at a Time shares a title with Lear’s 1970s sitcom, Calderon Kellett has described it as a totally new show. This version kept a few character names, some set elements, and the basic premise, but just about everything else has changed. Lear and Calderon Kellett show a passion for telling the Cuban-American story and for addressing social issues, and with America’s current political climate, there’s plenty of potential immigrant-centered content available to be mined and infused into thirteen episodes of this half-hour show.

Season two does not yet have a set release date, but the cast is already showing its excitement on social media. Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, and Stephen Tobolowsky are all set to return next season.
