Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor (2020) red band teaser trailer has been released by Neon and stars Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sean Bean, and Tuppence Middleton.

Plot Synopsis

Possessor is an arresting sci-fi thriller about elite, corporate assassin Tasya Vos. Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people’s bodies to execute high profile targets. As she sinks deeper into her latest assignment Vos becomes trapped inside a mind that threatens to obliterate her.

Possessor also stars Kaniehtiio Horn, Rossif Sutherland, Christopher Jacot, Gabrielle Graham, Hanneke Talbot, Raoul Bhaneja, Rachael Crawford, Gage Graham-Arbuthnot, Deragh Campbell, and Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves.

Thoughts

I’ve yet to see Cronenberg’s debut film Antiviral but based on the images from that one Possessor looks just as gnarly. Almost like a gorier take on Satoshi Kon’s Paprika.

I like how Riseborough is becoming a genre queen in her own right, with saturated horror vibes to rival her psychedelic predecessor of Mandy. I think this is also one of the finest examples of a “teaser” trailer in recent times. Even with the provided plot synopsis, I still can’t tell what the hell is going on! And for something that likely has many twists up its sleeves, I’d say maintaining that mystery is a good thing.
