Brenda Fricker was an amazing Irish character actress who never met a character she didn’t put 100% of herself into playing. She really rose to fame portraying Daniel Day-Lewis’s mother in the heavy dramatic Oscar-winning (for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress) film, My Left Foot. Playing her delicate role in that movie with grace and sophistication led to her taking the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for that film over heavy-hitters like Dianne Wiest (Parenthood) and Julia Roberts (Steel Magnolias).

In 1992, Fricker popped up in a box-office blockbuster, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Fricker portrayed the Pigeon Lady in the movie. This woman comes across as scary at first, but ultimately befriends Macaulay Culkin’s character in the picture, Kevin. The Pigeon Lady was a well-developed character who was kind to the birds after tragic circumstances led to her unfortunate predicament. Fricker relished in playing the showy role and the film made a lot of money at the box-office, bringing her talents to a much wider audience.

Fricker continued to choose the parts of eccentric, but often likable, characters. In 1993’s So I Married an Axe Murderer, Fricker had a ball playing Mike Myers’ Scottish mom. She did it up with a lot of pizzazz and the small role she played was hugely entertaining in that goofball comedy. She played a solid role in Angels in the Outfield, an entertaining family movie, just a year later.

While she may have won her Oscar towards the beginning of her career, the end of her career has proven that win was no fluke. Every part she played was done with dignity and compassion, making her a truly unforgettable actress.
