SCREAM 7 (2026): Matthew Lillard Slated to Return For New Film in Popular Horror Series

Matthew Lillard Coming Back to Scream Franchise
Matthew Lillard of Scooby-Doo fame is going to be back on the big screen in the latest Scream picture which is due out in 2026.
There is some exciting news regarding the upcoming Scream “requel” but the details of the casting that has just been announced are a little sketchy at best. Matthew Lillard (better known as Shaggy from the Scooby-Doo movies) is said to be coming back to the series after having been killed off in the original Scream picture from 1996. How could this be possible? Well, there are a couple of possibilities floating around though neither of them have been confirmed yet.
Perhaps, the most logical possibility is that Lillard will make a cameo as another character altogether. He could also be playing someone related to the character from Scream — a twin brother, perhaps? There is the other option that his character will be shown in scenes that occurred years back which could mean the filmmakers would try to de-age the 55-year-old Lillard to make him look similar to how he looked back in 1996. None of these potential scenarios have been verified so right now these theories are purely hypothetical.
In yet another major casting decision, former Mr. Jennifer Garner, Scott Foley of Scream 3 fame, will be coming back to the Scream franchise as well for Scream 7. He, too, played a character who was knocked off in one of the previous Scream films so the writers must surely have something interesting in store for this seventh entry in the series set to be directed by Kevin Williamson.
Another big choice in the casting department is to include an unspecified character played by Mr. Kelly Ripa himself, Mark Conseulos. Ripa’s husband, Consuelos, has appeared on the old soap opera “All My Children” (with Kelly, of course) so Consuelos is probably going to help turn this Scream series into an on-going horror soap opera considering his presence in the picture. Or what else could his presence signify for the Scream franchise, if anything?
Matthew Lillard is no slouch and has been working fairly steadily since his role in the original Scream from almost 30 years ago. A few years ago, he had fun with a small role in He’s All That based on a Mark Waters movie he starred in from the 1990’s called She’s All That. He recently appeared in Five Nights at Freddy’s which was a horror movie that was based on a popular video game. Look for more details on his role in Scream 7 as they develop. It will be fun guessing what exact part he will play in the new horror series film and guesses are already accumulating on several social media sites on the internet.
