Screenwriter and producer picked for Shazam. After news broke of Dwayne Johnson scoring the role of villain Black Adam, more information was released about the Shazam film, including a screenwriter and a producer. Entertainment Weekly reported that New Line Cinema will be producing with screenwriter Darren Lemke penning the first draft.

New Line president Toby Emmerich told EW about the kind of movie Shazam will be, saying that the film will have a different feel than what DC and Marvel made in the past. “It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself,” Toby Emmerich said. “It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

Emmerich didn’t give any more details on what the plot will be but did give us insight to what the tone of the film will be. He said that the film’s tone “will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real.”

The New Line president also spoke about Dwayne Johnson’s take on Black Adam, calling him a “complex character.”

“The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”

Screenwriter Darren Lemke, who wrote Jack the Giant Slayer and the upcoming Goosebumps film adaptation, was chosen by New Line to pen a draft for the new DC film.

So far there hasn’t been news on who will be playing the titular character and his kid alter ego. There also hasn’t been any release date for when Shazam will come out, but a rumor on SuperheroHype suggests that it will open on 2016 along with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
