Spike Lee to Direct Viagra Themed Musical

Spike Lee‘s next film project will be an as of yet untitled musical about the origin of Viagra, the erectile dysfunction drug from Pfizer.

The movie is based on an article in Esquire by David Kushner called All Rise: The Untold Story of the Guys Who Launched Viagra and will feature original songs by Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald the creative team behind the Tony award winning stage musical Passing Strange. Lee is set to direct based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Kwame Kwei-Armah.

In a statement, Lee said, “First And Foremost,I Thank Ms. Jacquelyn Shelton Lee. All The Great New York City Street Games That Might Be Sadly Lost Forever. My Father,Bill Lee,Jazz/Folk Bassist,Composer HATED HollyWeird Movies,Henceforth And What Not,Me Being The Eldest Of 5 Children I Became Mommy’s Movie Date. She Was A Cinefile. Thank You Lawdy She Didn’t Listen To My Ongoing Complaints About Musicals. Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks will produce along with Jackson Pictures. Kushner and Joanne Lee of Jackson Pictures are set to executive produce. Zev Foreman and Ilda Diffley will oversee for eOne.

Lee most recently directed the movie version of David Byrne’s hit stage musical American Utopia, in addition to the Netflix war drama Da 5 Bloods. After his long career behind critically acclaimed films like Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X and She’s Gotta Have It, Lee won his first Oscar for 2018’s BlacKkKlansman.
