SUFFRAGETTE (2015) Movie Trailer: Feminism Done Justice

Suffragette TrailerSarah Gavron‘s Suffragette (2015) movie trailer stars Carrey MulliganHelen Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, and Meryl StreepSuffragette‘s plot synopsis: “The foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State.”

I don’t know if its because I’m hungover and fragile or what, but this trailer for Suffragette really affected me. The period piece revolves around the state of women’s rights in the 1910’s in England. They’re second class citizens, expected to stay in kitchens and homes, relegated as accessories of men or silent bystanders. Carrey Mulligan’s character has been a factory worker since the age of 7, and finds herself wanting more for herself. She sees the guerrilla women throwing bricks through store-front windows and her heart notices that this, an active demand for change, is what she’s been looking for. We see a whole society erupt in action, staving away passivity and the status quo of remaining docile, in the hopes of one day being treated with dignity and respect. I’m usually cynical and tired of these historical dramas that parrot the latest politically correct cause de jour, but it feels like this movie may be doing it right. Everything here felt true – even the music choice worked for me. There are real heroes in this world, and way too often true courage and sacrifice is laid down by those with nothing. Prevailing through immense struggle and overcoming inequality is something that will always work for me. If I’d had one more drink last night and my hangover was any stronger, I may have actually shed a tear watching this.

I hope I’m very much in touch with myself, and not seeing something that isn’t there. Feel free to chime in below, please. I need some other voices besides those in my head.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
