SUPERGIRL: Melissa Benoist Discusses Wearing the Iconic Suit

Melissa Benoist Talks Putting on the Superhero Outfit for CBS’s Supergirl. Melissa Benoist feels like one lucky woman to be playing a popular superhero. The actress opened up about what it was like to wear the iconic costume when she filled the upcoming series Supergirl.

Once November arrives, Kara Zor-El will be flying into our screens for the new CBS series Supergirl. For Melissa Benoist, the moment when she wore the iconic suit for the first time was one she would never forget. Talking with E! Online, Benoist discussed her experience wearing the outfit, which was designed by Colleen Atwood, known for making the iconic costumes for Arrow and The Flash. Here’s what the actress had to say about shooting the series with the costume:

I just had this injury so I had this eye patch on. It was kind of embarrassing, but the second I put it on, something shifts inside of me. It’s kind of impossible not to feel strength and empowerment and positivity and hope. It really is pretty surreal!

Benoist had a chance to see the trailer and expressed how strange it was to see herself perform these stunts on screen. “I don’t recognize myself when I see those scenes”, she said, “Its kind of insane. The sheer scope of all of it, it’s so epic that its kind of mind-blowing to see it all put together.”

Seeing as to how there aren’t many female superheroes being portrayed on film and TV, it’s good to see shows like Supergirl starting the trend. Even with her becoming a side character to the famous Man of Steel, Kara has since stepped out of her cousin’s shadow and moved on to become one of DC’s most popular heroines alongside Black Canary and Wonder Woman.
