Waititi to direct and co-write new theatrical film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns

Fresh off an Oscar win for Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi will direct a new Star Wars film for Lucasfilm and Disney.

The untitled film will be Waititi’s return to the Star Wars universe, after he directed the Season One finale of The Mandalorian. However, this feature film will reportedly have a theatrical premiere as opposed to bowing on the studio’s subscription service, Disney Plus.

Waititi will co-write the film with fellow Oscar nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but beyond that not much else is known about the project. It’s unclear if this film will be a part of a new Star Wars series or a one-off; it’s also unclear if this will take one of Disney’s available slots for new Star Wars films in 2022, 2024, and 2026, or if this will be a completely new addition to their schedule.

Waititi was previously demure when addressed about Star Wars directorial rumors back in February, saying he’d only accept a project “if it was right”.

“I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with Star Wars, and think I’m having some big discussions about it,” said Waititi at the time. “I would fucking love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

Waititi seems to be the perfect fit for a fan-favorite franchise in need of distinct voices and some camaraderie. Having already established himself in Disney’s other major IP with Thor: Ragnarok (and returning to it in 2022 with Thor: Love and Thunder), his writing and directing should be able to pull in fair-weather and hardcore fans alike.

A happy May the 4th be with you, indeed!
