Television Critics Association Awards 2017 Nominations

Atlanta, The Handmaid’s Tale, This is Us, and the other nominations for the 2017 Television Critics Association Awards have been announced. The 33rd Annual Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards “recognize outstanding television programming in the 2016-2017 season, honoring actors, producers and programs in a variety of categories, including news and information, youth, reality, drama and comedy. Any show airing the majority of its season between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2017 was eligible for consideration.”

The current incarnation of the Television Critics Association is comprised of “more than 200 professional TV critics and journalists from the United States and Canada.”

Atlanta, The Handmaid’s Tale, and This is Us all received four nominations each in various TCA Awards categories including Outstanding New Program. The Handmaid’s Tale getting this nomination was no surprise. It’s a fantastic, well-written, well-acted show. Regarding This is Us, I have heard great things about its unique narrative.

I was surprised that 13 Reasons Why was not nominated in the Outstanding New Program category. It must have been the “controversial” subject matter to which some of the nominators objected. Some may have believed that they would be prompting such material if 13 Reasons Why received a nomination.

Stranger Things nomination for Outstanding New Drama over 13 Reasons Why was dubious but The Americans nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Drama was a no-brainer. The Americans is one of the most unique TV shows on television and one of the medium’s most innovative dramas.

The Crown received three nominations and it deserved each one. It was an outstanding and compelling narrative whose secondary characters, e.g. Winston Churchill (John Lithgow), in many instances were better than the main characters.

For the second consecutive year, HBO is in the lead with 12 nominations; FX has 11; Netflix has 10; NBC has seven; Hulu has four; ABC and PBS have three; Amazon, Disney and Showtime each have two; and A&E, AMC, BBC America, CBS, CNN, ESPN, and TBS finish with one.
