In case you do not feel like reading the article pictures, here are excerpts from the Entertainment Weekly The Avengers article:
“In the sequence theyâre about to shoot, Iron Man has just suffered serious ass-kicking, and Thor and Captain America are coming to his rescue. When Thor rips Tony Starkâs helmet free, the unconscious billionaire was suppose to wake suddenly, catch his breath, and ask, âWhatâs next?â Downey felt there should be more. Whedon agreed and put pen to paper, which resulted not just in a new series of exchanges between the three heroes, but a few alternates for Downey to say, giving the editors some options when itâs time to assemble the movie. One choice line from the bunch: âWhat happened?â Stark groans, coming back to consciousness as Captain America and Thor loom over him. âPlease tell me nobody tried to kiss me.”
[Chris] Evans raises another question as the cameras are about to roll. âWait, how do I check for a pulse?â he asks, realizing that Iron Manâs armor makes it impossible. [Joss] Whedonâs face furrows as he thinks. Right. âPress his chest, lean down, and feel for his breath,â the director says.
“âMay I see that?â he asks, reaching for Evansâ star-emblazoned shield. âMay I?â Evans hands it over and Downey spins it slowly like heâs studying a record for scratches. He attaches it to his arm for a moment, striking a defensive pose, then flips it over like a bowl and turns to a prop master nearby: âPut some nachos in that would ya?â”

More from Robert Downey Jr. on the scripting process:
What were Robert Downey Jr.âs first meetings like with Whedon when the script was being developed? âWell, I said, âI need to be in the opening sequence. I donât know what youâre thinking, but Tony needs to drive this thing.â He was like, âOkay, letâs try that.â We tried it and it didnât work, because this is a different sort of thing, the story and the idea and the theme is the theme, and everybody is just an arm of the octopus. But what was I like?â He laughs. âAs usual, just fâing aggressive and hurtful; whatever. The usual.â
From Scarlett Johansson on ‘Black Widow’ measuring up to the ‘big boys’:
âThe other day we were doing this big reveal shot of all the Avengers. Thor has got his hammer, Capâs got his shield, Hawkeye has his bow and arrow, and Hulk is huge. Then it pans over to me and Iâve got guns. Iron Manâs like, hovering above all of us, ready to go,â says Scarlett Johansson. âI was like, âJoss⊠um⊠do I look okay holding these guns?ââ Whedonâs response reassured her: âSheâs a total badass. Sheâs a killing machine.âFrom Chris Evans on the ‘Captain America’ character arc:
Chris Evans says the Steve Rogers we see in The Avengers is a much darker, more cynical version after awakening for the first time since World War II. âItâs just about him trying to come to terms with the modern world. Youâve got to imagine, itâs enough of a shock to accept the fact that youâre in a completely different time, but everybody you know is dead. Everybody you cared about,â Evans says. âHe was a soldier, obviously, everybody he went to battle with, all of his brothers in arms, theyâre all dead. Heâs just lonely. I think in the beginning itâs a fish out of water scene, and itâs tough. Itâs a tough pill for him to swallow. Then comes trying to find a balance with the modern world.âFrom Mark Ruffalo on Bruce Banner’s motive and ‘Tony Stark’ dynamic:
Mark Ruffalo says his Bruce Banner really wants to join The Avengers, but because of his past and the groupâs sort of overall fear of him, heâs the outcast among outcasts. âHeâs the most â guy, but a total loose cannon. No one wants to set him off except for Iron Man, except for Downey, who just wants to see him pop,â Ruffalo laughs. âItâs funny, thereâs a really cool dynamic between Tony Stark and Banner. Banner actually enjoys it, and finds it really refreshing. Theyâre a lot alike in a strange way. Theyâre both these kind of scientists who are mavericks, kind of renegades. Banner, for all his mild-mannered mythology, heâs still the dude who was testing some pretty crazy sât on himself, so he has that rebel streak in him.âFrom Chris Hemsworth on Thor’s motivation:
Chris Hemsworth says his hammer-pounding god is not just once again fighting Loki, his villainous brother from Asgard, but also secretly trying to protect him. âI think [Thor’s] motivation is much more of a personal one, in the sense that itâs his brother that is stirring things up. Whereas everyone else, itâs some bad guy who theyâve gotta take down. Itâs a different approach for me, or for Thor. Heâs constantly having to battle the greater good and what he should do vs. ⊠itâs his little brother there,â the actor says. âIâve been frustrated with my brothers at times, or family, but Iâm the only one who is allowed to be angry at them. Thereâs a bit of that.âFrom Jeremy Renner on his place in the film and dynamic with ‘Black Widow’
Like Black Widow, heâs the only regular human in The Avengers, which gives him a working-class-superhero pride. âThe only sort of thing I cling to is the relationship of past experiences with Scarlettâs character, with them both being human. I can cling to that,â says Jeremy Renner. But thereâs no insecurity. âQuite the opposite,â the actor says. âHeâs the only one who can really take down The Hulk with his tranq tip arrows. He knows his limitations. But when it comes down to it, there has to be a sense of confidence in any superhero.â
