The Bottom Line: January 31, 2020: BAD BOYS FOR LIFE Will Enjoy Another Dominant Weekend

Alice Krige Sophia Lillis Gretel and Hansel

The Bottom Line: January 31, 2020

When we left off last week, Bad Boys For Life continued to crush the box office competition (earning $128,407,740 domestically and $224,883,144 worldwide) while 1917 solidly maintained a second-place performance ($204,984,954 worldwide). Here we are a week later and let’s see what’s changed (except that I actually saw Bad Boys For Life – the only one of the movies in the franchise that I’ve seen and I enjoyed it).

Box Office Top Five

Honestly, not much. Rounding out the Top 5 this week is The Gentlemen ($13,620,011 domestic) and Doolittle ($46,881,795) who danced back and forth with each other all week in the third and fourth place slots. Little Women does not want to be forgotten, hanging out at the bottom of the Top 10 and earning $95,272,372, but popping up to fifth place midweek. Jumanji: The Next Level ($284,789,996), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($503,458,989), Just Mercy ($28,306,233) and Knives Out ($152,702,077) didn’t move much either. The horror flick The Turning ($8,331,665) debuted at #6 and bounced around, but never left, the bottom of the Top 10.

A Closer Look at Some of This Week’s Films

There are only two films debuting this February weekend. Two, and in my opinion, while Gretel & Hansel should do better than The Turning did, Bad Boys will continue its domination in the top spot. But hang on because coming around the corner is Harley ‘Freaking’ Quinn in Birds of Prey (February 9th release date) which I think will fly to the top of the charts and finally topple the Bad Boys next weekend. Right Mr. J? While we very impatiently wait, let’s check out the two movies that debut this weekend:

The Rhythm Section (R) 109 minutes: Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Sterling K. Brown star in this action-packed drama by director Reed Morano that is based on the novel. Lively plays Stephanie Patrick, a woman whose family was killed in a plane crash. She wants to find out the truth about the accident, which she finds out wasn’t necessarily an accident at all. I’ve always thought that when a film’s debut date bounces around a lot — which is the case here — it’s not a good sign for the movie, but Blake Likely was injured on set too, which delayed production, so we’ll see what happens.

Gretel & Hansel (PG-13) 87 minutes: As the movie poster says, this is a grim, not a Grimm (Brothers) fairy tale, so once again we have a creepy-crawly movie debuting this weekend. I think it will knock it’s competition, The Turning, off the Top 10 completely or, if anything, stomp it down to a definite bottom rung. Director Oz Perkins is known for directing The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)and in a completely different direction Legally Blonde (2001).

The Bottom Line

I hope you don’t mind more repetition, but like I said last week the good news is that February is only now one week away and we’ll have a bigger selection at the movies. Did I mention Birds of Prey!

Movies To Look Forward To

Birds of Prey (February 6); Sonic The Hedgehog (February 14) and The Call of the Wild (February 21).
