THE DEAD OF WINTER (2025): Emma Thompson’s Latest Gets Picked Up By Vertical Entertainment

The Dead of Winter To Be Released By Vertical Entertainment

Vertical Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to Emma Thompson‘s tense upcoming thriller, The Dead of Winter.

Formerly titled The Fisherwoman, director Brian Kirk’s nerve-wracking new suspense film is now called The Dead of Winter. This one is not to be confused with the 1987 Mary Steenburgen thriller, Dead of Winter, which showcased a completely different story line than this new film which stars the incomparable Emma Thompson. Vertical Entertainment is set to release the upcoming film in North America during the year’s fourth quarter and the company is putting their muscle behind the high-profile project which also stars Judy Greer.

Thompson plays a fisherwoman who discovers she may be a kidnapped young girl’s only hope. Set in Minnesota, Fargo comparisons may be unavoidable. This new picture will be set primarily during a blizzard which will up the ante in terms of the film’s suspense factor. Filmmaker Kirk hasn’t been behind the camera since 21 Bridges so this new effort is highly anticipated for the acclaimed director’s followers.

Emma Thompson recently appeared in the latest Bridget Jones movie which did quite well internationally and on Peacock. This new role she is featured in with Vertical’s The Dead of Winter has Thompson poised to do something unique that she hasn’t done before. Thompson’s name isn’t always associated with suspense pictures like this one, yet many expect Thompson to excel in this role.

Vertical Entertainment has released a slew of recent films that have been streaming successes and have also played brief theatrical runs. Sadly, one of their newest action pictures, In the Lost Lands, got “lost” in the shuffle and seriously under performed at the box-office, but the studio’s prestige films often fare better than their generic action pictures. One of the studio’s best received recent entries was from 2023. It was titled Miranda’s Victim and featured a great cast that showcased Abigail Breslin and one of the last turns by the legendary Donald Sutherland.

The Dead of Winter seems like it is going to be a big picture of interest for fans of the versatile Thompson. The actress will be finding herself in Frances McDormand territory with her work in this new movie. Set in the wilderness, nobody expects The Dead of Winter to be as big a hit as Fargo, but given the appeal of Thompson, anything could happen with this forthcoming film. Thompson is due for another Oscar nomination one day soon, and has always been an actress who has been at the top of her game throughout her distinguished career. The Dead of Winter is likely to expand her range as a talent who never seems to falter regardless of the type of role she takes on.
