The Top 10 Action Films Ranked by Box Office

Lists, lists and more lists, and we’re not done yet. This week, we have your top 10 action films ranked by box office receipts. It’s interesting that there is a lot of repetition here, with several Avengers movies taking slots. we’ve also seen the same movies on other lists. It’s interesting to compare where they fall on each list. If you’re looking for something to do while you are at home, feel free to use these lists to schedule movie night with your family. We used the U.S. and Canada box office numbers for ranking purposes.

Heath Ledger The Dark Knight

10. The Dark Knight 

In 2008, superhero film fans witnessed Heath Ledger’s incredible performance as DC Comics’ Joker. The movie also included megastars as Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman. The Joker tries to turn the city of Gotham into a chaotic land where he is in charge. Sadly, Ledger passed away before the movie hit the big screen, earning a whopping $534.9 million in North America and more than $1 billion worldwide.

9. Incredibles 2

It took 14 years to get a sequel to the awes2004 Incredibles, but oh boy this 2018 Pixar film was well worth the wait. The animated movie stars Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible and Holly Hunter as Elastigirl. It was directed by Brad Bird and made more than $633 million worldwide.

8. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi 

The second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi follows the 2015 flick The Force Awakens. Lucasfilm brought back the legends for this eighth episode of a nine-part Skywalker saga, including Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, and more. The film grossed $620.2 million in the United States and Canada and, of course, make more than $1.3 billion worldwide.

7. The Avengers 

This 2012 superhero film is based on the Marvel Comics superheroes of the same name. Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the ensemble cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner. This film focuses on the formation of the team that will try and stop Thor’s brother Loki. The film grossed $623.4 million in the United States and Canada and, stop us if you’ve heard this before, grossed $1.5 billion worldwide. It was also the third-highest-grossing film worldwide.

6. Jurassic World 

Moviegoers love their dinosaurs and in 2015, director Colin Tervorrow brought Jurassic Park fans a popular edition of the massive creature movie. Of course, there’s an escape and animal expert, Chris Pratt, must come to the aide of the people at the luxury resort when the dinos get out. The movie was the first of three movies planned in this trilogy and also starred Bryce Dallas Howard and Vincent D’Onofrio. The movie is set 22 years after the original Jurassic Park that came out in 1993. The movie grossed $652.3 million in and reached more than $1.019 billion worldwide.

5. Avengers: Infinity War

Hello, again to the Avengers superheroes. This 2018 Marvel Comics film is the sequel to The Avengers, which came out in 2012 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, which debuted in 2015. The ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch and Don Cheadle are back. This time, they are trying with the help of the Guardians of the Galaxy crew, to prevent Thanos from collecting the infinity stones and destroying the universe. It grossed more than $678.8 million and hit more than $2.048 billion worldwide.

4. Black Panther

Oops, they did it again. Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios debuted this 2018 film to a huge reception. The movie starred Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa (otherwise known as the Black Panther), as well as Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Martin Freeman. This movie, directed by Ryan Coogler, is one of the best superhero movies that Marvel did. It grossed $700.1 million.

3. Avatar 

Director James Cameron isn’t blue over the success of this 2009 movie, that’s for sure. Avatar starred Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver and is set on Pandora in the mid-22 century. With a budget of $237 million, the shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time — at the time — and the fastest movie to gross $1 billion. It made $760 million.

2. Avengers: Endgame

Back to Avengers, and this time it’s Avengers: Endgame taking the number two slot in our list of the Top 10 Action Films by box office this week. This is the sequel to Infinity War and came out in 2019. The cast of characters is back in action and ready to continue their fight against Thanos. The movie grossed over $858.4 million in the States and $2.8 million worldwide. It sits above Avatar, knocking that movie out of the number one spot as the highest-grossing film of all time.

1. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens 

Last, but certain not least, is Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which takes the number one slot as the Top 10 Action Films Ranked by Box Office. The movie was co-written and directed by J. J. Abrams and it follows Return of the Medi from 1983. Like the Avengers series, the same cast of characters is back and audiences loved this movie. It grossed $936.7 in the United States and Canada and $2.068 billion worldwide.
