THE WOLVERINE 3 (2017): Hugh Jackman Talks Retiring From Wolverine

Hugh Jackman Discusses His Final Roles as Wolverine. It’s hard to imagine Hugh Jackman no longer playing the iconic role of Wolverine. Since the announcement of the third Wolverine film being his final time playing the clawed mutant, Jackman teased about where his character’s going.

Even though the Australian actor went on record saying that James Mangold’s next Wolverine film will be the last one, Jackman hinted that we might see him appear in some sort of appearance in both X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool before then. Huffington Post recently caught up with the actor while he was promoting his new documentary Dukale’s Dream. When he was asked whether or not he could appear with Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool, Jackman replied, “Hmmm, I can’t … no. Nope,” Jackman mumbled under his lips while giving off a sweet smile. “But, I am really good mates with [Reynolds] so…” Even when he was questioned about appearing in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, the actor said, “Who knows?”

Speaking about retiring from the character, Jackman described the feeling as leaving the party with high spirits and moving on. He spoke about what factored in on his decision and if he had any doubts about it:

There was a period about six years ago when I could see my choices being narrowed by Wolverine, but now I feel like they’ve opened up from doing Les Mis or Prisoners or Pan. The options coming to me right now are more varied than they’ve ever been in my life,” He jokingly added of what’s to come. “Hopefully, I’m not that actor in 10 years who’s unemployed going, ‘Why did I ever leave it?’ and then begging to come back.

Jackman thanked 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment for the opportunity and being supportive over the years playing Wolverine. As to who will take up the mantle after the actor’s gone, the actor said that the studio is likely to search for the next star to play him. “They were all really supportive – 17 years is a long time,” he said. “And I’m sure that they’ve already started casting, you know? Someone may sign up for an 11-picture deal, as we speak.”

When it comes to shooting for the final Wolverine film, Jackman expressed his excitement to start his final journey with the character:

Weirdly, I’m really excited about shooting it. I feel great enthusiasm, I suppose it’s denial — like the football player who announces their retirement before their last season — and so I’m really looking forward to it. But, I know it’s not over yet! I still got a lot of 4 o’clock mornings and a hell of a lot of egg white omelettes and steamed chicken to have, and all of that.

I feel very blessed that I loved playing this part, the last ‘Wolverine’ and that last ‘X-Men’ [‘Days of Future Past’] were maybe two of the best and I feel like, hopefully, we’ll do it again with this last one.

Are you guys sad to see Hugh Jackman leave his role as the Wolverine? Do you think he may show up on X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool? The third Wolverine film is expected to release on March 3, 2017.
