Paolo Sorrentino‘s The Young Pope (2016) teaser trailer stars Jude Law. The Young Pope‘s plot synopsis: “‘The Young Pope’ tells the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII’s pontificate. The eight-episode series stars Jude Law as the complex and conflicted Pius XIII, the first American pope.”

With the current Pope being one of the most popular in history, this series should attract attention. Not just because of the aforementioned fact but because Pope Pius XIII (born Lenny Belardo) does not seem like a stereotypical Pope. On the contrary, he seems as atypical as they come.

Though the series will air in the U.S. on HBO, there are a lot of players behind the scenes thus the series will air on other channels as well. Sky Atlantic, Canal, and HBO were all involved in the production of the 8-episode series.

The Young Pope also stars Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli, and James Cromwell.

Diane Keaton will play Sister Mary, an American nun living in Vatican City “who raised Belardo and helped him reach the papacy.” James Cromwell plays Cardinal Michael Spencer, Lenny’s mentor. Silvio Orlando plays Cardinal Voiello, Secretary of State. Cécile de France plays Sofia, in charge of marketing in the Vatican City. Javier Cámara plays Cardinal Gutierrez, Master of Ceremonies of the Vatican City. Ludivine Sagnier plays Esther, wife of a Swiss guard.
