Joachim Trier‘s Thelma (2017) teaser trailer stars Eili Harboe, Okay Kaya, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Henrik Rafaelsen, and Vanessa Borgli. Thelma‘s plot synopsis: “A young woman begins to fall in love, only to discover that she has fantastic powers.”

While watching this trailer, I immediately thought of the coming-of-age film Water Lilies and the character intimacy that was created by its script, actors, and actresses.

The young woman (Elli Harboe)’s emotions and her powers in Thelma seem to be interconnected. There is a opera scene in this teaser trailer that showcases this point in a subtle yet powerful way. Example: the emotion of what the protagonist is seeing transpire on stage activates part or all of her power (s). Mainstream superhero films could and should take note of this dramatic use of physic powers.

There was also the tone of the trailer and the film that were striking: one moment romance, the next shaking power and the inexplicable happens. Like the trailer portrays, such mental powers could be horrifying to a person if they were unaware of their existence and didn’t know how to control them.

The hospital scenes throughout the Thelma teaser trailer are either the main character trying to figure out what is going on in her head, her parents, or the authorities. Regarding the latter, if she and her powers are unmasked, everyone will want to know how she does what she does.
