Alexander Payne Hopes Election Sequel Gets a Theatrical Release
The long-awaited sequel to 1999’s comedy, Election, is going to be called Tracy Flick Can’t Win and director Alexander Payne would prefer that it doesn’t premiere on Paramount Plus.
Alexander Payne made a major comeback last year with the hit movie, The Holdovers. That film’s star, Paul Giamatti, received numerous accolades for his work in the dramatic comedy and, now, Payne is ready to start thinking seriously about the sequel to his hit 1999 film, Election. The book that the upcoming movie will be based upon, Tracy Flick Can’t Win, has been successful enough to ponder the possibility of making the film version a theatrical release instead of a movie that would premiere on Paramount Plus.
When Payne made the deal for the sequel, it was agreed upon that it would be a picture to show on Paramount Plus but Payne’s history as an Oscar-nominated filmmaker may make the project a bit more prestigious than was originally anticipated by all involved. The original movie only made under $15 million at the domestic box-office but the film went on to become a hit on video and beyond. True, The Holdovers only made $20 million domestically but its theatrical release positioned it as a serious Academy Award contender. It’s uncertain if the Election sequel, Tracy Flick Can’t Win, would have Oscar prospects but given the director’s history, it could be a real possibility.
Paramount movies that originally were intended to premiere on Paramount Plus like the recent Mean Girls reboot and Smile had successful theatrical runs. Smile is even getting a sequel which is going to be released into movie theaters soon. Tracy Flick Can’t Win could even serve as a standalone movie given the fact that Reese Witherspoon became an Oscar-winning actress several years after the original Election and she also became queen of the box-office even before her Academy Award win with movies like Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama. This new sequel could be the perfect way to position Reese Witherspoon’s return to theaters. Witherspoon has been working steadily these days but could use a theatrical hit to rekindle her one-time box-office reign.
Alexander Payne has been in the process of co-writing the script for the film adaptation of Tracy Flick Can’t Win. It’s uncertain as of now if it will actually go into theaters but with movies like this year’s remake of Mean Girls lighting up the box-office, it may be worth it for the studio to take a risk with the new Election movie either for the prestige alone or for a potential box-office hit. Payne movies always seem to have Academy Award potential written all over them so let’s see where the chips will fall on this one.
