TV Review: THE BIG BANG THEORY: Season 9, Episode 2: The Separation Oscillation [CBS]

CBS The Big Bang Theory The Separation Oscillation TV Show Review. The Big Bang Theory: Season 9, Episode 2: The Separation Oscillation had Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) both trying to cope with the fallout from their recent bitter situations. While Leonard chose the wiser and more intense method of coping to find the closure to his cheating fiasco with his new wife Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Sheldon chose to deal with Amy’s (Mayim Bialik) decision to leave with…well…the more “Sheldon-esque” approach: one full of immaturity and crude bluntness.  Overall, the episode was a step in the positive, bringing back more of the funny and dealing with less of the drama. Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Howard’s (Simon Hedberg) bromance was back in the mix as well, which was a refreshing bit of the show we had been missing.

Leonard definitely manned up this week, as we saw him confront Leslie Chow, the woman whom he kissed on the North Sea, and the cause of all his recent frustrations with Penny. The result was a sudden realization of the insecurity in both Leonard and Penny’s minds, each one of them worried that the other might want to leave for someone brighter and better. When they each addressed this issue together, it clarified that they are truly happy with one another. But did Leonard and Penny actually resolve their feelings? Or will these insecurities and mixed emotions continue to bubble over and evolve over time? Whether this issue will continue to play out over the span of the season remains to be seen, but for the time being it would seem as though Leonard and Penny are back on the right track.

Sheldon and Amy…well, that’s another story altogether. The main focus of this episode seemed to be Sheldon’s desperate yet nasty attempts to get back at Amy for leaving him. His efforts to make her jealous and his mean jabs at her during his (now solo) “Fun with Flags” segment were hilarious, but ultimately hurt his standing in his relationship with Amy even further. Overall, Sheldon seems to be on a crash course through heartbreak this season, which is a different yet depressing storyline we’re interested in seeing resolved sooner rather than later. While it’s a new twist in their relationship, we love seeing Sheldon and Amy playing off of each other on-screen. The question is…will Sheldon continue to hurt Amy to the point of no reconciliation? Or will he realize the error of his insensitivity and try a more respectful way to reform his relationship with Amy?

While this episode was a much needed breath of laughter, we’re looking forward to seeing Leonard and Sheldon as they move onward. While Sheldon still has much soul searching to do before he seems likely to end back up with Amy, we look forward to seeing what wacky adventures the guys will take in the meantime. We also got a quick glimpse of the girls in action this week, but likewise, we can’t wait to see what hilarious situations Penny, Amy, and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) can get into in the coming weeks. All in all, if this strong start to a 9th season is any indication of the rest of the episodes to follow, it’s safe to say this season is going to be a wild and uproarious ride.
