Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Trailer 2

The second teaser trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) has been released by STX Entertainment. This trailer is far better than first trailer. This trailer gives the viewer the level of peril awaiting the City of a Thousand Planets if agents Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) fail in their new mission.

Some of the CGI is impressive, some of it is not (including some of the sequences based heavily on it). There is one scene on a beach and the entire time I was thinking, why didn’t they film this on a real beach? Let’s leave out all the breaks in physics. We would be here all day.

Like the similarly heavy CGI trailer for Justice League, the Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets trailer is exciting and entertaining. But beyond that, will it be fulfilling or will it be vapid? Another high-end adventure film set in the future, Snowpiercer, was visually beautiful and possessed an engrossing narrative. I do not see Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets being that engrossing by any stretch of the imagination.

On the surface, The Fifth Element was but the more you watched it, especially its third act, the more you saw what it could have been but was not. I hope that is not the fate of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets‘ plot synopsis: “In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha — an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.”

Luc Besson‘s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets also stars Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Alain Chabat, Mathieu Kassovitz, Kris Wu, Herbie Hancock, Rutger Hauer, and John Goodman.
