Lynne Ramsay‘s You Were Never Really Here (2017) international movie trailer stars Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov, Alessandro Nivola, John Doman, and Alex Manette. You Were Never Really Here‘s plot synopsis: based on the book by Jonathan Ames, “A missing teenage girl. A brutal and tormented enforcer on a rescue mission. Corrupt power and vengeance unleash a storm of violence that may lead to his awakening.”

The first thing that the viewer will think when watching this trailer is that it has similarities to Martin Scorsese‘s Taxi Driver. The main protagonist is a taxi driver or at least that is his cover. In actuality, he is an enforcer (via the plot synopsis), someone that fixes problems for those that can afford his services. In that respect, Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) is like the character Ray Donovan from Showtime‘s original TV series Ray Donovan.

Joe’s destructive and ultra violent personality will also remind You Were Never Really Here‘s cinephile audience members of Jay from Ben Wheatley‘s Kill List.

The mixture of all those elements plus the additional element from Taxi Driver of child prostitution seems to have been done successfully, especially with the visceral, excellent camera work courtesy of director Lynne Ramsay.

You Were Never Really Here also stars Judith Roberts, Jason Babinsky, Vinicius Damasceno, Cristina Dohmen, Leigh Dunham, Kate Easton, and Frank Pando.
