James Franco‘s In Dubious Battle (2016) international movie trailer and movie poster stars James Franco, Nat Wolff, Selena Gomez, Bryan Cranston, and Vincent D’Onofrio. In Dubious Battle‘s plot synopsis: based on the book by John Steinbeck, “In the 1930s in California’s apple country, nine hundred migratory workers rise up “in dubious battle” against the landowners. The group takes on a life of its own-stronger than its individual members and more frightening. Led by the doomed Jim Nolan (Wolff), the strike is founded on his tragic idealism-on the “courage never to submit or yield.”

I have never read the Steinbeck this film is based on but Franco seems to have crafted a good human drama out of it. It may be more correct to say that he translated the already great drama well. As I said, I have not read the book yet.

In Dubious Battle also stars Ashley Greene, Analeigh Tipton, Josh Hutcherson, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Zach Braff, Keegan Allen, John Savage, Ahna O’Reilly, and Beth Grant.
