Talk about a breath of fresh air. President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy announced today that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be writing and producing an unspecified number of new Star Wars films. After writing and producing six seasons of Game of Thrones and gearing up for the seventh and final season, Benioff and Weiss will shift for Westeros to a universe far, far away.

In a joint statement, Benioff and Weiss had this to say about their new joint venture with Lucasfilm and Disney:

In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.

The Benioff and Weiss Star Wars films will not be part of “episodic Skywalker saga” or part of director Rian Johnson‘s Star Wars trilogy. From that part of today’s announcement, it seems that Kathleen Kennedy has given the accomplished writers a wide berth when it comes to the creative avenues that they pursue and where they can go within the bounds of the Star Wars universe.

It was always a question on what David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would do after Game of Thrones came to an end. Benioff and Weiss wanted out of the Game of Thrones universe, so they wouldn’t be working on the Game of Thrones spin-off series that multiple HBO writers are currently working on. Benioff and Weiss had been pursing Confederate, a TV series with the what-if premise of the confederacy winning the Civil War. That series fell through, hence the conjecture about where Benioff and Weiss would land. With today’s Star Wars announcement, fans of Benioff and Weiss’ work in the literary and television worlds now know.

Kennedy had this to say about hiring David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to write and produce new Star Wars films:

David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.

One thing is for sure, I am officially excited for future Star Wars films again.
