We’re in development right now.

The stunt co-coordinators turned action movie directors were ambiguous about whether the original film’s Star, Keanu Reeves would be returning to the franchise with Stahlski stating,

If we could work with Keanu Reeves for 10 movies you’d have a really cool career.

Stahelski did elaborate on how the future films would seek to build upon the original going so far as to state that they can outdo the action in the original.

We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.

Produced with a relatively modest budget estimated to be in the $20 million range, John Wick was released to little fan fare back on October 24th, 2014. Upon its release tales of John Wicks fantastic fight choreography and action set pieces spread like wildfire, leading to the film exceeding financial expectations as well as gaining recognition as an instant classic. After receiving some of its highest praise from die-hard action movie fans, any potential John Wick sequel will be up against some extremely high expectations.  Now that the John Wick film property is a certified money maker it is likely that any future films in the franchise will have to deal with money hungry studio execs keeping track of every bit of production minutia with the intensity of the eye of Sauron’s unwavering gaze. I wonder if the next film in the series will be able to avoid the effects of studio tampering (sequel-itis)?
