The Hunger Games Catching Fire is the Highest Grossing Film of 2013. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) is not only the highest grossing film of the year, it is the first number film lead by a female character since The Exorcist. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire made $409. 3 Million while the number two film, Iron Man 3, made $409.1 Million.

Mark Harris alerted many to the achievement via Twitter, confirmed by BoxOfficeMojo:

Remarkable stat: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the first movie with a solo female lead to be the year’s #1 film since The Exorcist.

Conventional, Hollywood wisdom says that an actress can’t open a film as strongly as a actor can. It would seem that thought-process now needs to be tweaked. Maybe it should read something like: “The right female lead coupled with the right script and fan-base can open a film just as strongly if not more so than their male counterparts.”

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘s plot synopsis: based on the Suzanne Collins‘ novel, “THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts.  Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.”
