TV Review: DEXTER: Season 6, Episode 1: Those Kinds of Things

Michael C. Hall, Dexter

Dexter Season 6 Episode 1 Those Kinds of Things Review. Dexter: Season 6, Episode 1: Those Kinds of Things presents an enigma regarding Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall). The viewer will not know where Dexter is going this season but the two seasons before it, from this first episode, seem vastly more engaging in terms of Dexter evolving, people findig out what he was, and the authorities closing in on him. This is only the first episode so things may change.

Of course there are new killers this season, Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks) and Professor James Gellar (Edward James Olmos), with religious motives and colorful MOs but it always comes down to Dexter and he has re-set (or has been re-set), back to the old Dexter from season 1, for better or for worse.

This season starts out with police detective/plot buffoonery. A married woman dies from a apparent self inflected gun shot wound to the head. Dexter finds dried blood underneath her finger nails which the police missed (how could CSI and the ME both miss that), matches it to the husband whom the police don’t suspect of foul play (because they never checked her hands or her finger nails, finding the blood, riiiiight), and takes care of the husband as only Dexter can. I do not know if the episode writer Scott Buck thought the audience wouldn’t notice the lack of police, CSI, and ME due diligence, thought we were stupid or included this logic gap to move things along. For whatever reason, this plot hole is glaring to an individual that pays attention and whom has watched crime TV shows in the past.

Dexter is beginning to ask questions about existence and God. It is intriguing to watch a psychopath do that but it seems more of a plot device, the new killers are religious, than a genuine new exploration of Dexter. Maybe it is both. We will have to wait and see.

Reconciling beliefs with actions was a great discourse at the end of the episode. With Dexter’s child going to a Christian school and the religious criminals, faith and god have found their way into Dexter this season.
