10 Best Movies on Netflix Right Now for November Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 22021

The Starling

The Starling

Directors: Theodore Melfi
The Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd. Timothy Olyphant, Daveed Diggs

Hello, my name is Lisa and I must confess I adore Melissa McCarthy. From her comedic roles in Bridesmaids, Mike & Molly, Identity Thief, and Spy to her no-it-wasn’t-a-comedy role in St. Vincent and her awesome portrayal of Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me?  She has had some duds, for sure, but The Starling isn’t one of them. Melissa plays Lily Maynard and the ever-adorable Chris O’Dowd portrays her husband Jack. The couple lost their infant daughter to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Jack takes it so hard that he lands in a mental health facility. Lilly stays at home, facing her grief for her daughter and her yearning for her husband, alone. When she takes to gardening, a starling attacks her, leading to wonder if there is a message or reason for the attack. Maybe because I’m such a huge McCarthy fan that I don’t see the critical reviews, but I enjoyed this movie. It’s deep and dark and touches upon suicide, but it also shows the paths that each person needs to take to get through their grief.

Carrie Pilby

Carrie Pilby

Directors: Susan Johnson
The Cast: Bel Powley, Nathan Lane and Scott Keiji Takeda

I came across this 2016 film by accident on Netflix. I was searching for something else and it caught my eye. The description of Carrie Pilby is that she is a person of high intelligence who struggles to make sense of the world as it relates to morality, relationships, sex, and leaving her apartment. Her mom died, her father has met someone new and the relationship she had with her college professor went sour, so Carrie is lost. A natural introvert, she has trouble stepping out and meeting people, so her therapist, played dramatically by the oft-funny Nathan Lane, gives her a list of things she must accomplish. By doing so, Carrie meets others who change her perception of friendships and relationships and help her to step out of her small world. A little slow-moving at times, this coming-of-age type movie might be of interest if you’re looking for something different.

Stuck Together

Stuck Together

Directors: Dan Boon
The Cast: Dany Boon, Francois Damiens, Laurence Arne

When the pandemic hit, movie and television productions shut down all over the world. It was simply impossible to bring people together and fly around doing movie shoots. So why not write and direct one right where you are quarantining? That’s exactly what director Dan Boon does in this movie about a Paris building where the quarantine is underway and the residents must learn how to get along. While many of us are trying to put those days behind us, it’s interesting to see another person’s perception of what is happening.

Ghost

Ghost

Directors: Jerry Zucker
The Cast: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn

This 1990 classic thriller film is a must-see and a must-rewatch if you’ve already seen it. Patrick Swayze stars as Sam, who is married to Demi Moore’s character Molly. Unfortunately, Sam dies an early death, leaving Molly alone. However, Sam’s ghost stumbled upon Oda Mae, played by Whoopi Goldberg, as a psychic who can hear him. Wanting to get a message to Molly that his death was a murder, Sam convinces Oda Mae to see his message through. Knowing the truth, however, puts Molly in a precarious position. This movie boasts an iconic scene with Molly and Sam at a pottery wheel. It also makes me yearn for the late Patrick Swayze again.

Serendipity

Serendipity

Directors: Peter Chelsom
The Cast: John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven

I’m nothing if not predictable. Every holiday season, I watch some of the same movies over and over again. But then again, who doesn’t! Netflix has some of my favorites this year, including The Holiday and this 2001 movie with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, Serendipity. Jonathan and Sara meet at Macy’s while shopping for Christmas presents and instantly have a connection. They spend a few hours together and when Jonathan asks Sara for her name and phone number, she tells him that they should leave their next encounter up to fate. She puts her name and number in a book and tells him if it’s meant to be he’ll find the book. A few years later, Jonathan has never given up even though he’s about to be married and so, actually, is Sara. Is it Serendipity that they belong together? Tune in. I adore this movie and I think you will too.

Angelas Christmas

Angela’s Christmas

Directors: Damien O’Connor
The Cast: Malachy McCourt, Ruth Negga, Caitriona Balfe

There’s sweet and then there’s sweet and Angela’s Christmas is sweet. This animated movie is   based on the children’s story from Pulitzer Prize winning Irish author Frank McCourt, and is set in Limerick, Ireland in the 1910s. Angela wants to make sure everyone is having a great Christmas and sets out to reunite her family. It’s a family-friendly film that showcases the true meaning of Christmas.  When you’re done with this one, watch the sequel.

Titanic

Titanic

Directors: James Cameron
The Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet

If you’re one of the few people who haven’t seen this 1997 blockbuster movie by director James Cameron, now is your chance. Okay, to be honest, you already know how this one ends, but the storytelling and the cinematography is worth every award that Cameron got for the movie. Plus, it put young DiCaprio and Winslet on the map. It’s a tear-jerker and you’ll be quoting “I’ll never let go Jack,” for months afterward, but we can’t really let go of this movie anyway, no matter the fact that we know what happens.

Stripes

Stripes

Directors: Ivan Reitman
The Cast: Bill Murray, Harold Ramis

Bill Murray. ‘Nuff said. Go watch. Okay you need more, I get it. Bill Murray joins the Army after losing his apartment, job, car — well, everything. So now you have goofy Bill Murray in the strict, by-the-book Army. The shenanigans have only just begun. Just go in with those expectations. This isn’t Private Ryan. It’s Bill Murray in scrubs trying to fit into the Army. It’s just a fun night.

Dancing Queens

Dancing Queens

Directors: Helena Bergström
The Cast: Molly Nutley, Fredrik Quiñones

This is not a documentary about ABBA. Instead, it’s a movie about Dylan , a young woman from a small island in the Bohuslän archipelago who aspires to be a professional dancer. She cleans at a drag club and when the club’s dancer finds out she wants to be a dancer, she pulls Dylan in. But it’s a drag show…so what now?

Untitled Design

Still Laugh-In

Directors: George Schlatter
The Cast: Tony Hale, Tiffany Haddish, Neil Patrick Harris

It wouldn’t be a list from me if I didn’t include a documentary I think you would enjoy. And this month’s selection is Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate, a tribute show to the original, funny and quirky Laugh In that ran for five years on NBC, from 1968 to 1973. It’s great to look back at some of the funniest shows of their time with some of the greats, including Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Judy Carne, Jo Anne Worley, Goldie Hawn and more.
