A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS: George R.R. Martin Sat Down For The Early Panel [NYCC 2025]
New York Comic Con, Day 1, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms panel recap.
Comic Con 2025 kicked off with a Q&A session featuring the cast of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The new series from the modern fantasy master, George R.R. Martin, that takes place one hundred years before Game of Thrones will follow Ser Duncan “The Tall” and his little buddy Egg on their journey across Westeros.
It felt like autumn had finally arrived in New York as the patient attendees took their seats on the first day of the Con. While it wasn’t technically the first panel of the day, it certainly felt like the most important.
The panel was moderated by Brandon Davis of the Get Over Yourself podcast and featured showrunner Ira Parker, actors Decter Sol Ansell (Egg), Peter Claffey (Duncan), and the man, myth, and original story writer himself, George R.R. Martin. The panel, lasting an hour, showcased some behind-the-scenes fun, such as the anxiety associated with horse riding and the epic battles Claffey and Ansell engaged in while playing Mario Kart following their filming days.
The new series will be taking place in between the timelines of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. As Ira Parker described, the series scope will be tightly fastened to Duncan and Egg’s journey, as opposed to the more sprawling stories of the two previous series.
George R.R. Martin discussed his background writing for television before deciding to break free of the shackles required to adequately perform in the field and turning inward to worlds unknown. His name has become as ubiquitous with the genre as Stephen King is known for horror.
The two young actors were delightful and personable. It seemed clear that the eleven-year-old Ansell was much less nervous than the hulking Claffey up on stage in front of the New York crowd. A humorous moment arose when Claffey was asked about the difficulties of being a knight in the world of Westeros when he professed, “It takes a lot more to become a knight in Westeros than it does in Middle Earth.” A confession that he tried to take back at every turn. Sorry, Tolkien.
The series will be premiering on January 18, 2026.
