Robert Pattinson Could Sew Up a Best Actor Nomination

Robert Pattinson could be Oscar-bound for his latest lead performance in filmmaker Lance Oppenheim’s fact-based drama, Primetime.

There are four actors virtually guaranteed to get Best Actor nominations from the Academy: Tom Cruise (Digger), John Malkovich (Wild Horse Nine), Matt Damon (The Odyssey) and John Turturro (The Only Living Pickpocket in New York). Hoping to be among those heavy-hitters is Robert Pattinson for his leading work as Chris Hansen in the Lance Oppenheim film, Primetime. This new A24 drama just recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

In Primetime, which is about the 2006 attempt by Hansen to make a compelling point with his work on the television show, “To Catch a Predator,” Pattinson is said to be more than solid in his leading role. He certainly looks absolutely fascinating in this meaty part in a year in which he’s appeared in other high-profile roles in movies like The Drama and The Odyssey.

That aforementioned potential Oscar buzz for Primetime doesn’t stop with Pattinson’s work in the picture. Other performers have juicy supporting roles in the picture, which could translate to Academy Award nominations. Merritt Wever as the lead producer of Hansen’s show, and Skyler Gisondo as an actor employed to be a decoy for a pervert in the proceedings, are in the running for supporting nods for what is said to be stellar work in this new film.

Will Pattinson make the cut, though, in the lead category for Best Actor? That’s the million dollar question, and given the competition, it will take respect for Pattinson’s year as a whole to lead to the actor receiving that coveted fifth spot on the Best Actor Oscar nominees list. If we had to guess, if Pattinson does get in, it will be for the utmost respect that the Academy has for the actor for appearing in such a diverse body of work in a single year.

Don’t count out the box-office results as an indicator of whether or not the three stars of Primetime secure those Oscar nods in their respective categories. If the movie actually works for art house audiences and grosses at least $20 million domestically, then those Academy Award nominations could, indeed, kick in, regardless of the CinemaScore grade, if the movie even reveals one publicly.

Primetime revolves around Hansen’s downfall when an assistant DA kills himself after being set up by a decoy. Also appearing in the film are Jerry Maguire‘s Jonathan Lipnicki, Bokeem Woodbine and Anna Faris as Mary Joan Hansen.

When it comes to Pattinson’s cinematic year thus far, as a whole, I’m one and one. I loved him in The Odyssey and hated him in The Drama, but this new role is absolutely intriguing, so look for the verdict when Primetime is reviewed by FilmBook later this month.
