Nicole Kidman has a new picture called Babygirl which is directed by Halina Reijn and it has just received a 7-minute ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
An upcoming Christmas movie season release from A24, Babygirl, received a 7-minute ovation at the Venice Film Festival which didn’t stop until the stars exited the theater. This was the film’s world premiere. It’s not a big surprise considering the director, Halina Reijn’s 2022 film, Bodies Bodies Bodies scored a 9 out of 10 from us here at FilmBook. Kidman was wise to team up with Reijn and knew a good opportunity when she saw it. Oscar buzz for Kidman’s controversial performance has started circulating and the film’s release date positions it as a definite contender.
In Babygirl, Kidman plays a high-powered businesswoman whose affair with a young male intern (Harris Dickinson) affects her emotionally and physically while majorly interfering with her family life. This premise of an older woman liberating herself sexually with a younger man could seem risque but in the hands of Kidman and Reijn, it’s likely to become one of the most talked-about movies of the year.
Venice Film Festival audiences are known for their enthusiasm but this project seems to be a special one and the ovation is not to be taken lightly considering the caliber of the talent involved. A24, Babygirl’s studio, is starting to build festival buzz on this one which could carry it to the Oscars. Bodies Bodies Bodies paved the way for Reijn to get to this point. Nicole Kidman is an Oscar-winner who won her Best Actress Academy Award playing Virginia Woolf in 2002’s masterpiece, The Hours. She was nominated for her exquisite work in Moulin Rouge! as well the year before her win. Now, 20 some odd years later, it could be Kidman’s chance to get another Oscar nod for her work in Babygirl which is a movie that is about sexuality, and women’s choices. This is the type of movie that gets people talking at the office at work and could be a box-office hit if A24 gives it the proper care it deserves in terms of its theatrical release strategy.
Antonio Banderas co-stars in Babygirl as well. Banderas has always been an actor to contend with and ages like fine wine with each major film performance he gives improving significantly upon the last.
