John Malkovich Takes Volpi Cup for Best Actor

John Malkovich has just upped his odds to win Best Actor at the Academy Awards with his Venice International Film Festival prize for Best Actor.

In Wild Hose Nine, John Malkovich plays a CIA agent, who is known as a “big mouth,” in the early 1970’s. It’s a role any actor would kill for, and, now it’s poised to lead the actor to potential Oscar glory. Malkovich has secured the coveted Volpi Cup for Best Actor at this year’s Venice International Film Festival. Malkovich could probably be said to be a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination (as of right now) in the leading actor category.

There are three other spots on the Best Actor list which insiders think are going to be occupied by Matt Damon (The Odyssey), John Turturro (The Only Living Pickpocket in New York), and Tom Cruise (Digger). Meanwhile, the fifth spot could go to one of these three performers: Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary), Robert Pattinson (Primetime) or Andrew Scott (Elsinore). That’s an incredible line-up, no matter who gets in, and with Malkovich the current front runner, it’s poised to be quite a race. Anthony Ippolito is also on the sidelines for a potential nod for his work in the highly acclaimed new film, I Play Rocky.

Meanwhile, at Venice, other big prizes were handed out as well. The Golden Lion went to Woman Unknown, the Silver Lion went to Possible Love, the Special Jury Prize went to Naza, and Best Actress went to Mathilde Arcel for Woman Unknown.

When it comes down to Best Actor at the Oscars, Malkovich has the edge right now over the other candidates. Ryan Gosling, Matt Damon and Tom Cruise are steadily working A-listers, whose moment to win may still be upon us in a future year. Malkovich has paid his dues in Hollywood, and then some, and an Oscar win would solidify his status as one of the most unique talents ever to grace the silver screen. Meanwhile talents like Turturro, Pattinson, Ippolito and Scott would be lucky to secure their nomination, with the promise of even better roles to come.

Malkovich has been nominated for two Best Supporting Actor Oscars for his work in Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire. It looks like the third time could be the charm although if he faces some truly fierce competition, it will come in the form of Matt Damon, whose amazing work in The Odyssey is a notable feat, to be certain.

Colin Farrell previously won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor several years back for The Banshees of Inisherin (also from Wild Horse Nine director Martin McDonagh), but Farrell ultimately lost at the Oscars. That means a campaign for Malkovich to win must begin in order to see the veteran actor secure the prize.
