Pedro Almodóvar Film Takes Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival
Pedro Almodóvar is long overdue for an Oscar win and his latest film, The Room Next Door, has just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Pedro Almodóvar is back and, this time out, he could be headed to the Oscars. His new picture, The Room Next Door, has just taken the coveted Golden Lion which comes as little surprise given the film’s 18-minute ovation following the premiere of the picture. Silver Lion for Best Director went to Brady Corbet for the critically acclaimed upcoming picture, The Brutalist, which has been the recent recipient of outstanding reviews which makes one believe it will go on to achieve Oscar glory.
The Room Next Door is Pedro Almodóvar’s first English language film and the filmmaker has obviously shown that his earnest ambitions create great art time and time again. Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star in the movie in roles that are said to be among these Oscar-winning actresses’ finest work to date. The film will have definite appeal to those who like movies about writers. This film is about a pair of writers and their connection with one another. It is going to be a Sony Pictures Classics release.
The Brutalist is a historical epic film starring Oscar-winner for The Pianist, Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce. A film partly about a Holocaust survivor, The Brutalist, has the markings of a movie destined to get nominated for Best Picture. According to sources, Searchlight and Sony Pictures Classics are both said to be trying to acquire it for distribution.
Nicole Kidman won Best Actress for her work in a highly regarded thriller movie, Babygirl. Kidman’s mother has recently passed away so the actress couldn’t be there to accept the award for her work in the upcoming dramatic picture. Vincent Lindon won Best Actor at Venice for his work in The Quiet Son. Lindon is a fine performer who was in films as remarkably unique as Titane. This latest endeavor, The Quiet Son, is said to be about coping with tragedy and it undoubtedly features some of his best work yet, judging from this prestigious honor at Venice.
The Room Next Door will soon screen at the New York Film Festival where it will undoubtedly get more positive word of mouth spreading around town. There could be enough accolades received by that film to ensure that somebody associated with the picture (Pedro Almodóvar, Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton or co-star John Turturro) takes home an Oscar. Swinton and Moore are always at the top of their game and under Almodóvar’s guidance, expect their time to come to get more love from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yet again.
