The new creature feature, Godzilla Minus Zero, will premiere at the New York Film Festival in the Spotlight Gala section of the prestigious event on September 26th.

Brace yourselves. Godzilla will be in the Big Apple on-screen at the New York Film Festival showing of the latest creature feature, Godzilla Minus Zero, which will play at Alice Tully Hall on September 26th. When 2023’s Godzilla Minus One took the Visual Effects Oscar, there were plenty of excited fans who wished for the new follow-up movie which is likely to showcase equally (if not better) impressive effects.

The New York Film Festival is the perfect place for a movie like this to have its world premiere. That’s because Godzilla has a chunk of fans based in the big city and at New York Comic Con in 2024, the event “70 Years of the King of the Monsters” took place. Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki will be helming the soon to be unveiled sequel to Godzilla Minus One as well. Set in 1949, the new film will run 135-minutes which will make it a longer Godzilla picture than most fans of the legendary monster movies are accustomed to.

Yamazaki revealed fun facts at the 2024 Comic Con that will help set the stage for the next chapter in the Godzilla franchise. One such fact was that Godzilla is modeled after the director’s cat. Godzilla Minus One grossed an astonishing $113 million worldwide with $57.1 million of that coming from domestic ticket sales. The latest chapter of the monster movie classic series will premiere in movie theaters after it is showcased in late September at NYFF64 on November 6th, only three days after its Japanese premiere. 

All bets are off as to how this film will go down playing at such a diverse film festival. It is clearly the big movie that is going to get people interested in the festival, if they weren’t already intrigued by a slate of potentially great films which was released today.

Godzilla was re-made in 1998 and that was a version that under-performed at the box-office. It featured Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno and was really underappreciated by critics (it has just a 20% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences alike back then. That being said, we had a 2014 version that fared a tad bit better, securing more than half a billion dollars at the worldwide box-office.

This newest film in the creature feature series, Godzilla Minus Zero, is expected to bring down the house at the New York Film Festival’s 64th edition and its surprise inclusion in the festivities is just what New Yorkers and visiting festival goers expect from a festival like this one which is of the highest caliber ones in existence in America today — the NYFF.
