Academy Awards 2017: Oscar Nominations

La La Land, Moonlight, Arrival, and the other Oscar nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards have been announced. The 89th Annual Academy Awards is a film award show “accolade by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. The formal ceremony at which the awards are presented is one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world and is televised live in more than 200 countries annually. It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media.”

La La Land leads the pack with this year’s Academy Awards nominations. La La Land received fourteen Oscar nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards. Moonlight, unsurprising, received the second highest number of nominations. Moonlight received eight Academy Awards nominations. La La Land and Moonlight have been neck-and-neck this entire awards season. If La La Land had not come out this year, Moonlight would be sitting atop the nomination heap for Oscar nods.

Lion was a surprise with seven Academy Awards nominations but the bigger unforeseen occurrence was Arrival. Arrival garnered eight nominations. I thought Arrival was “okay” but evidently the people that vote for the Oscars saw something that I did not.

Fences, Hidden Figures, and Hawksaw Ridge were assured Academy Awards nominations because of their quality. I was happy to see that they all received them.
