Andy Whitfield replaced as Spartacus in SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND: Season 2

Andy Whitfield will be replaced as Spartacus in the upcoming second season of StarzSpartacus: Blood and Sand. This was inevitable, especially after Andy Whitfield exits Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Season 2 to Fight Cancer. Spartacus: Blood and Sand is Starz’s highest rated show ever (I believe, do not quote me). Starz had only three choices after Andy stepped down: cancel the series, wait for Whitfield again (not knowing how long his recovery could take) or replace him and move on.  The economic decision was made and I bare no ill will for Starz for making it. At least the show continues and everyone else not killed in Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Season 1, Ep. 13: Kill Them All is returning.

Like I said previously, there was no way Starz was going to let this show sit on the shelf indefinitely. There was too much money to be made. Also do not forget that show producers might have lost more of the original cast if they had waited any longer. Cast members might have gone and signed up for other shows and film projects in the interval and have become unavailable to re-up their parts. Better to lose one pivotal actor than five or six.

Another regrettable fact about Andy stepping down: Show producers won’t be able to use any of the footage of Whitfield from the first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, including those with his wife. New flash back scenes will have to be shot. All Andy footage where his face is shown can not be used. Too bad.

The official casting call for the new Spartacus:

Caucasian male in his mid to late 30s to play the “smart, intense, passionate” title role. Interested parties must have an authentic British accent and be prepared to sign a three-year contract.

So what do you think about this latest Spartacus: Blood and Sand development? Who is your choice to play Spartacus in Season 2? Will you be watching Season 2 with a new Spartacus?

Update: Liam McIntyre replaces Andy Whitfield: Spartacus: Blood and Sand
