AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM (2023): Amber Heard Was Once Considered to Be Cut From Sequel

Amber Heard Almost Got The Boot From Upcoming Aquaman Film

It has been reported that, due to lack of chemistry with star Jason Momoa, Amber Heard was almost replaced on the upcoming film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Amber Heard may have made a lot of headlines due to her troubled relationship with Johnny Depp but it was a lack of chemistry with the handsome heartthrob Jason Momoa that had put her job in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in jeopardy. Heard, once an excellent character actress in films like The Joneses and The Rum Diary, became a sensation with her role in the box-office smash hit, Aquaman from 2018. She was almost not invited to return for the sequel but, luckily, she will, indeed, be reprising her role as Mera in the upcoming sequel set to hit theaters in March 2023.

With a beautiful song like the one found at the end of the 2018 movie, Aquaman, you would think the stars of the picture had terrific chemistry. That song was the hauntingly wonderful “Everything I Need” by Skylar Grey. Jason Momoa and Amber Heard didn’t have that great on-screen connection in the first film but stood well on their own looking very attractive in their own right. So, naturally, when the movie made a whopping $335 million at the domestic box-office, there was very little chance Heard would have gotten replaced although she did not get a pay raise for the sequel, according to sources.

In the DC movie world, Aquaman was one of the biggest non-Batman films and even got an “A-” CinemaScore grade to boot so why fix it if it’s not broken by replacing Heard? It doesn’t really matter that Heard was going to be replaced because she was not but it is interesting to think about what would have happened if she was, in fact, cut from the sequel. Who would have played the role? I can’t think of many who would have done the role as well as Heard did in the original whether she had chemistry with Momoa or not.

Many people may be focusing in on the troubles between Heard and her ex, Johnny Depp (who was replaced on the latest Fantastic Beasts movie), but let’s take a moment and focus in on the actress, herself, who is quite talented as evidenced by her turns in her supporting roles and, even, her part in 2018’s Aquaman. While Depp and Heard have been having troubles for over half a decade, let’s concentrate on the acting work first and foremost. You’ll be able to do just that when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom opens on March 17, 2023. We’ll hope that Momoa and Heard have some better chemistry this time out!
