Assassin’s Creed Movie Image Has Been Released. Justin Kurzel‘s Assassin’s Creed (2016) is coming out next Christmas, and we’re already being treated to a pre-production still. This is good, as we’ve known of this videogame adaptation for a long time now, but haven’t gotten a single thing to sink our teeth into – until now.

Michael Fassbender is arguably the greatest actor of his generation – I say that well aware of how bold a statement that is – one need only to look at his performances in ShameInglourious Basterds, and Hunger to see my point. The fact that he’s the one who got this adaptation rolling in the first place, is producing and starring in it, and seems to be taking great care with this property is an immense sign of trust and validation for those of us who long for one, good videogame adaptation.

Take a look at Fassbender as Callum Lynch, a character created for the film alone and separate from the other Assassin’s Creed protagonists you were able to play. He looks absolutely perfect, does he not?

Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch

I’m excited to see this film start shooting, and get a sense of what this film is going to feel like. It seems like a fairly simple adaptation, in terms of audience engagement. Get an assassin, choose a time period, stick to one basic plot (he’s falsely accused and must resolve the conspiracy before he’s killed! something like that) and voila, solid videogame adaptation. We’ll see!

According to Slashfilm, however, it seems they’re going with the well worn ‘superhero discovers his powers’ route: “Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.”

Well, that’ll work, in terms of three-act structure and pacing. I almost can’t believe we’re going to see Fassbender in an Ubisoft property.

Assassin’s Creed also stars Marion CotillardMichael Kenneth Williams, and Ariane Labed.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
