AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER (2022): James Cameron Has Two Sequels in the Can but He May Not Direct 4th and 5th AVATAR Films

James Cameron Close Up

James Cameron May Not Helm 4th and 5th Avatar Movies

James Cameron has two Avatar sequels under his belt, one being Avatar: The Way of Water, but may not direct the 4th and 5th films in the series.

In one of the funniest comedies of the late 1990’s, The Muse, James Cameron makes a surprise appearance. Sharon Stone, that film’s star, tells Cameron (playing himself) that she doesn’t see him returning to the water anytime soon. That was in regards to a Titanic sequel since Titanic came out in 1997. I doubt Stone would give Cameron that same advice when it comes to an Avatar sequel and Cameron has undoubtedly returned to the water for Avatar: The Way of Water due later this year. Avatar, the original 2009 picture from Cameron, made $760 million domestically and earned a coveted “A” CinemaScore mark. 13 years later, the sequel is finally going to be unveiled and it will be a defining moment in Hollywood history. But, whatever happens, due to Cameron’s personal plans, he may not return to direct Avatar 4 and 5, according to sources.

Cameron, it turns out, has other projects he’d like to develop and knows that Avatar movies are “time-consuming.” However, Cameron teases that the 4th picture in the series will be quite interesting (he didn’t exactly say it that way). In fact, Cameron goes outside his usual PG-13 territory to add that the 4th picture in the series will be a “motherfu–er.” Avatar: The Way of Water is set for a December 16, 2022 release.

The Avatar sequel due out this year will reunite some of its big stars and fans couldn’t be more excited. Giovanni Ribisi and Sigourney Weaver are two of the most underappreciated members of the original film’s cast who are on board the 2nd movie in the series. Kate Winslet, Rose herself from Titanic, will also be in Avatar: The Way of Water. Too bad Leonardo DiCaprio couldn’t get in on the action.

While a 3rd Avatar movie is also going to inevitably see the light of day (or the dark of movie theaters, rather), the 4th and 5th movies actually getting made will depend a lot on the two follow-up film’s box-office takes. Either way, Cameron’s involvement in those 4th and 5th films is a bit iffy according to the director but we shall see. What if Avatar: The Way of Water and the 3rd movie in the franchise are so successful that Cameron will have no choice but to put his other passion projects aside? He still could “pass the buck” to a new director but will he pass on the “bucks” the series could make with a 4th and 5th film directed under his guidance? Time will tell.
