THE INSTIGATORS (2024): Matt Damon and Casey Affleck Pair Up Again for a Homage to Films Like MIDNIGHT RUN

The Instigators Marks the Return of Matt Damon and Casey Affleck
Matt Damon and Casey Affleck are teaming up for an Apple TV+ movie called The Instigators which is an action comedy in the vein of Midnight Run from the late 1980’s.
This August, a new Doug Liman action-comedy called The Instigators is coming out on Apple TV+. This film is a throwback to films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and much-loved Robert De Niro/Charles Grodin gem, Midnight Run. The film will revolve around a pair of robbers (Damon, Affleck) who target a corrupt politician and end up going on the lam with the assistance of one of their therapists, played by Hong Chau. The Boston-set heist movie could also be a segue into a potential new Bourne role for Damon.
Damon and Affleck are no strangers to performing together. Their history goes as far back to hits such as Good Will Hunting from 1997. They have a natural charisma as performers which makes one able to foresee that The Instigators could be something fun like the two aforementioned movies which inspired it. Chau’s role is certainly going to be the icing on the cake in a film which also includes a supporting performance from the always capable Ving Rhames of Pulp Fiction fame.
Buddy action comedies were once box-office gold and then didn’t get made as often as they once were, although the new, upcoming Bad Boys movie is proof that they still exist. The Instigators could be a little lighter than the Bad Boys films, though. Damon will serve as a dad in the new Apple TV+ movie while Affleck will play an-convict. This is the type of wild heist movie that a director like Doug Liman could truly sink his teeth into and make a really action-packed good time out of. The Instigators is a return to the type of buddy action movie that audiences once loved decades ago.
The casting of Chau, who is playing Damon’s therapist in the new picture, is also a stroke of genius and a terrific addition to a project which seems like it will be a huge success for Apple. Edward Berger, the director of All Quiet on the Western Front, has a new Bourne idea for Damon which could soon be revealed as well. That would be something of interest for those waiting to see Damon involved in another Bourne project. The only thing that isn’t certain yet is whether or not The Instigators will play in movie theaters around the time it starts streaming. It’s definitely the type of project that would play well on the big screen as Liman films often do even though his last film, Road House, went straight to streaming.
